Spooked by my own stories

"Be careful what you write about as it might come true." ~ Anonymous poster  by Lynn WL  Hi everyone, this is Sharleen (a.k.a. Lynn). As most of you know I'm the author of most of the stories on this blog, but this is like the first time I'm addressing my readers, and that's because I have something interesting to share other than just stories. I love ghost stories 👻 but I have to admit I'm also a bit of a scaredy cat. When I was a kid my parents didn't like me reading spooky stories because I got scared so easily, and they said I had an overactive imagination. But the whole point of reading ghost stories is to get scared, isn't it? I mean it's kinda fun to get scared. Well, this is only true as long as you realize the stories are fictional and you believe nothing similar can happen in real life. In other words, once you stop reading you stop being scared.  However, as you probably know, this is not always the case especially if the stories are ba...

Haunted Hayride - a Halloween Horror Story

Image
It was a chilly night on the second weekend in October. The autumn air in Blackwood Hollow didn't just chill your skin. It clung to it like damp wool. Every October the Miller farm hosted a haunted hayride to celebrate Halloween, many people's favorite holiday. It was local legend material: tractor-led, sprawling across forty acres of overgrown timber, populated by high school kids in cheap foam masks who jumped out from behind corn shocks to make teenagers spill their cider. That night the hayride started the way it always did. Creaky trailer, smell of diesel and straw, kids screaming on cue at the plastic skeletons wired to the fence posts. Marla had worked the Blackwood Hollow haunted hayride for three seasons and could recite the script in her sleep. Scarecrow jump-scare at the first bend. Chainsaw guy (no chain, just noise) at the pond. Fake grave markers with the corny puns. This year, they had added a new stretch of trail through the back acreage, past the old orchard n...

Mom told us about the faceless ghost

Image
It was Friday, Halloween night. Mom wanted to give us a special treat, so she told us the story of the faceless ghost. Family friendly. by Lynn WL The following happened when I was 9 years old. I was sharing a room with my big sister at the time, but on weekends during the warmer months I would camp out in the backyard with my 8 year old little brother Kevin. It was a lot of fun, and we both always looked forward to it. Faceless ghost That year Halloween fell on Friday which was an extra treat for us since we could stay up later. We had a blast trick-or-treating. I dressed as a witch, and Kevin a pirate. I loved going barefoot so I was a barefoot witch, but Kevin wore shoes. We got a boat load of candy, and when we got home we immediately went into the tent. My feet were quite dirty but I didn't bother to wash them since we were going to sleep outside the house. As we were sorting out the candy mom suddenly appeared in front of the tent. We were both startled as we weren...

The little girl in a cold October night

Image
October night, two weeks before Halloween. I was shocked at how cold and foggy it was as I walked out of my evening class to the bus stop. As I was waiting for the bus, a little girl walked over. She was in a tank-top and shorts, and she was barefoot. by Lynn WL It was 7 PM and I just got done with my evening class. I was tired and hungry, and couldn't wait to get home. But it would be a while before I could savor mom's delicious pot roast because my car was being repaired in the shop, so I had to take the bus home. Yeah, I was still living at home although I was in college. I was wearing my favorite outfit: a tank-top, distressed jeans shorts, and flip flops. I was shocked at how cold it was as I walked out the building. Where I live it very rarely gets cold in October. There must have been a strong cold front. It was my fault for not checking the weather forecast, but it had been a super busy week. I had 2 tests and a paper due. It was still warm when I left the house i...

The night I went trick-or-treating

Image
A not-so-scary (just a little) yet fun and heart-warming Halloween story about a free-spirited 12 year old girl, who was a bit rebellious but also kind of a scaredy cat, who decided to go trick-or-treating sans shoes. Family friendly. by Lynn WL It was 7 pm Halloween evening, and I just finished my light dinner. A number of little kids had come to our door, and I enjoyed handing out candies to them while admiring their fancy costumes. Now I was ready to go out trick-or-treating myself. I was supposed to meet my best friend Amanda at her house, which was just 2 blocks away, and then go out together with a couple of other friends. My mom wanted to walk with me there, but I was 12 years old and I thought I was old enough to walk 2 blocks by myself. Besides, we lived in a very safe neighborhood, so I wasn't scared or anything. Or so I thought. So I lied and told my mom that Amanda had gone out with her mom to the store to get some stuff, and they would stop by and pick me up on the...
